Maureen P. McCausland, DNSc, RN, FAAN is an experienced Healthcare and Nursing Executive and a Senior Advisor at McChrystal Group. She combines an extensive strategic and operational background in complex academic medical centers and health systems with her interest in improving organizational outcomes and developing the next generation of leaders. Recently she was Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, and Corporate Executive Team member for MedStar Health. In this role, she participated in strategy development and served as a Senior Nursing Executive responsible for system-wide oversight and leadership of all aspects of nursing including attainment of Magnet Hospital and Pathway to Excellence recognition. She was accountable for patient safety, quality of care and clinical informatics in partnership with the system Chief Medical Officer.
Prior to joining MedStar in 2010, Dr. McCausland served in a number of Executive Leadership positions including Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services, and Chief Nursing Officer at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics where she led the organization to Magnet Hospital recognition and the nursing staff received the inaugural NDNQI award for Outstanding Nursing Quality in an academic medical center. She provided Executive Leadership for the transplant, heart, vascular and thoracic, and oncology service lines. She also co-chaired the clinical program subcommittee of the strategic planning committee. She served as Chief Nurse Executive at the University of Pennsylvania Health System and Associate Dean for Nursing Practice and Professor of Nursing Administration at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Dr. McCausland served as Vice President for Nursing at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and Associate Vice President for Nursing at The Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. She served in various other roles including Vice President for Nursing at the Hanna Pavilion, University of Hospitals of Cleveland and in a variety of progressively more responsible roles at Boston Department of Health and Hospitals.
Dr. McCausland is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, was a Johnson & Johnson Wharton fellow and a senior fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Science degree in Nursing Administration from Boston University and received her Master's and undergraduate degrees, cum laude, in Nursing from Boston College. Dr. McCausland is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, American Nurses Association, American Academy of Nursing where she is a member of the Audit Committee and Chair elect of the Building Healthcare Systems Excellence expert panel and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She is a past member of the Board of Directors of Sigma Theta Tau and the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research where she served as Secretary and Treasurer. She served on The Joint Commission Nursing Advisory Council, Hospital Advisory Committee and the Chief Nurse Executive Council. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of Miriam’s Kitchen in Washington, DC. She is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Connell School of Nursing at Boston College.
