Meet Thomas
Tom Maffey is a Partner at McChrystal Group, where he advises senior executives on transformational change, strategy execution, and building organizations that perform under pressure. He brings decades of experience leading complex organizations across the public and private sectors, with deep expertise in leadership alignment, enterprise‑wide communication, and disciplined execution in dynamic environments.
Since joining McChrystal Group in 2013, Tom has played a foundational role in shaping the firm’s consulting capabilities and is a recognized expert in designing and implementing effective strategic planning and operating models. From 2016 to 2019, he served as Chief Operating Officer of McChrystal Group. During the COVID‑19 pandemic, Tom led a McChrystal advisory team embedded directly with a state governor, helping structure and sustain a whole‑of‑government response—including the development of multi‑source data dashboards to enable real‑time executive decision‑making.
Prior to McChrystal Group, Tom served as President of Brinks Inc.’s Latin America Region, overseeing operations across 10 countries and leading more than 35,000 employees. Earlier, he completed a 30‑year career in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Brigadier General after serving in some of the military’s most elite organizations, including the 75th Ranger Regiment and Joint Special Operations Command. His final military role was Director of Army Training and Leader Development, and he deployed in support of operations in Grenada, Panama, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Tom holds a Bachelor of Arts from St. Peter’s College and is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College. He is based in Virginia.
